YouBelongWithMe

Over the Thanksgiving break (Happy belated Thanksgiving by the way), I was learning to play Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” on the guitar (I am getting good at it if I do say so myself). And as I learned to strum this country tween song, I started to pay close attention to the lyrics:

If you could see that I’m the one who understands you
Been here all along so why can’t you see?
You belong with me
You belong with me

and…

Standin by, waiting at your back door
All this time how could you not know that?
You belong with me
You belong with me

Plain and simple – this song is about stalking someone.

The video is just clever in its presentation. It sugarcoats the psychotic tendencies by putting a dowdy marching band girl in the stalker position. This way, we feel sorry for her – but I know better.

As a former marching band geek, I should empathize with the dorky girl who can’t get the guy, but the fact that she constantly repeats “You belong with me” invokes the spirit of Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. She might as well be chanting Satanic verses whilst sacrificing a goat and burning a lock of the boy’s hair.

Don’t be fooled by this sweet video. The girl is a hormonal psycho she-beast on the prowl for tween blood. For crying out loud she constantly “waits by his back door.” She is totally delusional.
