Is it safe to say that we have moved passed using the term “token Asian” to refer to lone Asians in film, TV, music and other entertainment outlets?
Kind of, but not really.
Nonetheless, it seems like the shaggy haired charm of John Park has made its way to the top 24 on American Idol.
The homeboy is talented.
Now that he is in the prestigious top 24, he has the dutiful task of representing all the Asians in the country – or world for that matter. Every single Asian American eye is going to be on him, hoping that he makes it to the top. No matter how good or bad he sings, every single Asian is going to pump their fist in the air and yell “ASIAN POWER!” as they call in to vote. On top of that, Asian doctors and engineers who wish they could’ve been singers, actors or artists but instead chose a life of practicality are living vicariously through John Park.
The fate of our culture is in his hands. He’s the chosen one. He’s like Neo in The Matrix.
