It was great to see everyone back in the rehearsal hall at McKinley High: Rachel, Mercedes, Kurt, Tina, Puck, Finn, Quinn, Brittany, Mike, Santana, Artie, Matt, Emma, Mr. Schuester, Principal Figgins and, of course, the tongue lashing Sue.
But why wasn’t I jumping out of my seat and singing along?
I think it’s because I expected so much and got a gleeful amuse bouche (no pun intended) instead of a buffet that I can binge on.
No matter how much I tried to avoid it, I think I fell into the overhyped Glee vortex – a “Glortex” if you will. I fell victim to Glee overstimulation via Facebook, Twitter, pop-up ads, street posters, and an avalanche of word-of-mouth. People kept on talking about nearly everything that was going to happen this season – and I just wanted to live in the moment with tonight’s episode.
I just need to pull back on the reins a little bit more so that I don’t O.D. on the Glee – because that can be a very bad thing.
Refreshing things about tonight’s episode: Introducing musical theater hard-hitters Jonathan Groff and Idina Menzel into the mix was pretty cool – and although the Emma/Will love story isn’t my favorite part of the show, seeing Terri quietly torment Emma was delicious.
Some not so fresh moments of the show: The show lacked a spark that I felt with with the first few episodes. Yes, the music was good (the Lea Michele’s “Hello” duet with fellow Spring Awakening alum, Groff was the best), but this particular episode seemed like it was the 3rd or 4th of the season.
Then there was Sue Sylvester’s “Vogue” teaser to next week’s Madonna extravaganza; which was quite enjoyable – especially when she did that running-man breakdown.
I am trusting this premiere was just a little treat for us. I think Ryan Murphy is waiting for next week to throw a bigger bone at us.
