Boxing Day is celebrated the day after Christmas and, from my haphazard Internet research, it is celebrated by a bunch of European countries, Canada and other Commonwealth nations — whatever that means. It’s a day when “members of the merchant class to give boxes containing food and fruit, clothing, and/or money to trades people and servants.” In other words, it’s a day when people give gifts to people of a lower class. Sounds very politically correct, no?
This geist infection has nothing to do with that. I am referring to the pugilistic art of boxing. With the Dec. 17 opening of The Fighter (stay tuned for a review of some sort) starring the Oscar bait trifecta of Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adams, I see it more than appropriate. Boxing or derivations thereof have been infecting the geist.

Of course, I have to mention Manny Pacquiao just because, as a Filipino, I am contractually obligated to do so — but I do want to throw the trailer for the modern rock ‘em sock ‘em Hugh Jackman vehicle, Real Steel.
I already hear the bad reviews waiting in the wings — but Kate from Lost is in it!
To round out this geist infection, Eminem just signed on to do Southpaw written by Sons of Anarchy creator/executive producer Kurt Sutter — which is another movie about boxing…
Boxing is quite geisty.
