Paul McDonald Brings Sax-y Back to American Idol

I know American Idol-philes are still mourning over the loss of Pia and, in turn, bitching about the presence of Stefano — but the show must go on. And by show, I am talking about Paul McDonald.

I have a fascination with McDonald — his abnormal white teeth, his Best Little Whorehouse in Texas wardrobe, his bolo ties, his “it’s all good dude” indie band charm — all of it is mesmerizing. And this week, he pulled out one of the best things ever: a female saxophone player to accompany his rendition of “Old Time Rock and Roll.”

The saxophone needs to make a comeback and this is the perfect launchpad for the long lost instrument that upped the awesome level to the original Beverly Hills 90210 theme song and every ballad by Debbie Gibson in the ’80s and ’90s.

Will Paul win the whole thing? Based on his use of the saxophone, yes, he should. Based on reality, no. Perhaps he should bust out the keytar next week. That would seal the deal for me.
