Monday: Acted a fool while inspiring young minds at the Academy and experimented with calamari cooking techniques, discussed Rosetta Stone and had Tagalog lessons with Trisha and Steven.

Tuesday: Screening of “Milk” (Please, go see this movie.
Wednesday: Was a part of a fashion panel on “Sustainable Fashion” for the Innovative Fashion Council of San Francisco, where I spoke of all my knowledge on the topic alongside five other fashion industry professionals to a standing room-only audience.
Thursday: Wrote during the day, met Bernardo with Cheryl for a meeting. Went to a Saks Fifth Avenue/GQ event, then a Ferragamo thing and then to a 2.5 hour (without credits mind you) screening of “Australia” – which was an unbelievable romantic epic! I love Baz Luhrmann.

Friday: Erline flew in, but have yet to hang with her. Had a meeting and then interviewed “Australia” costume designer, Catherine Martin via phone. Interviewed GQ style correspondent, Brett Fahlgren at Saks. Visited a new store called Shotwell. Ate cookies, pizza and then frozen yogurt. Went on a hunt to buy something expensive, ended up buying a Podoll shirt at a warehouse sale in Hayes Valley for $25 – but I am still on the hunt for some lace up boots. Which reminds me: Nice Collective – can you please hook me up with a pair of your new boots?

Plans for the weekend: Saturday: Tagging along with my sister to Cupcake’s party. Yes, her nickname is Cupcake and I shall be known as Bundt Cake that day. Then later that evening, my cousin is making it hot with a b-day party. Sunday: Hip Hop DanceFest at the Palace of Fine Arts.

Aren’t you glad I just bragged about how busy I am during my work week? Don’t you hate it when people always say “I’m SOOOOOO busy!” Instead of saying that, I am just going to show you how busy I am – so take that! And believe me, I will excessively name drop when appropriate. Also, you can stalk me this weekend since I told you everything I am doing short of bowel movements and morning jogs.

WHOA. It’s been a very adventurous kind of day! First off, let me just mention that Mondays are my busiest days. I wake up around 5 or 6 to go the gym, get back and then prepare for my long day of teaching and writing in the city – but that’s hard to do when someone yanks your hoodie with your keys in it. Like normal, I put my hoodie in the public cubby holes in the front of the gym. I usually have no problems with that, but today was a different story. When I was ready to go, I realized that someone had taken my hoodie – along with my keys. I had no access to my car – and my wallet and cell phone were in there. Luckily, my car was still there which gives me a positive assumption that the person “accidentally” took my hoodie because they lumped their things with mine in the cubby hole, therefore carelessly taking my possessions along with theirs. The gym staff didn’t help much – there wasn’t anything they could do. So I just sat there for 30 minutes trying to make a plan of attack. I called a locksmith [...]

I called a locksmith who took me back to my place so that we can “break in” in order to get my spare keys. While he was doing this, I was wondering whether or not if he really knew that this was my house. I mean, is it that easy? Can anyone just call a locksmith and say, “I am locked out – can you break into my house for me” and then pick some random house? Okay – now that I read that, I don’t think it’s as easy as it sounds.

Anyways, I managed to get my spare car keys and get my car at the pretty price of $135. So the crisis was averted – kind of. My keys are still floating around out there and I am kind of paranoid. I need to change my locks that’s for sure.

Luckily, I was only 30 minutes late to work (my boss willingly covered the first portion of my class – I owe her lunch) and I did get all of my required writing for the day. I also ended it with a screening of “Body of Lies” which I am still marinating on.

I have a theory that a vampire has been listening to my thoughts of becoming one of them and stole my keys in order to lure me to join his coven – but I am not that easy. I still need to know what the coven can offer me in terms of benefits, cultural adeptness, style factor and whether or not they are like the Cullens in “Twilight” or if they are like the evil nomads.

Overall, I am surprise I didn’t go ballistic when all this happened. I am so surprised I didn’t break down. And for that, I am proud of myself. More than that, I am proud that you read this really long post. Give yourself a round of applause.

Why the hell did I buy this movie? It was so gloriously bad that it was good. If you have two hours to kill, watch Scott Baio combine his telekinesis with T&A and teenage angst. It’s the best.

It was better than I thought. If you watch it for one thing, watch it for Robert Downey Jr.’s performance. Hilarious. And this movie could possibly make us like Tom Cruise again…Matthew Mcconaughey- not so much.

I have been reading…

I have this affinity for short stories. I also have an affinity for film. Put them together and what do you get? This great book of short stories that are destined to be movies. One that really stood out to me was called “Some Pig,” by Nancy Davidson. It’s about a budding chef turned food critic who fights the urge to review his rival’s restaurant. When he finally does muster up the courage to review the place, he gets obsessed. Another good one was called “Waltzing Matilda” by Russell Bittner – well, it was quite fucked up. It’s about a girl who gets hijacked in her own car and its described in the book as “Natural Born Killers” meets the “Hitchhiker.” That should tell you how fucked up it is.

Yeah, I’m reading selections from this again. I just can’t get enough of Augusten.

I have been writing…

Actually, I have been trying to finish this novel that I started earlier this year…and I just have extreme anxiety every time I approach the blank page. I think I just need a break.

Also, for the first time, I am going to share an excerpt from the book. Don’t you feel special?

I always wondered to myself if college was a waste of my time and my parents’ money. Going to a university didn’t seem like a choice.

To my parents, I was to go to kindergarten, spill over into elementary school with ease and make straight A’s (which I managed to do), go through the awkward pain of puberty-infused junior high and then seal the deal with a 8 x 10 piece of paper that proved I was full of John Hughes angst like every other high schooler.

From there, I would go on to please my parents at a university that had a familiar name that would impress their friends.

I would imagine my parents at Filipino dinner parties dining over a lechon and sugary confections like bibingka. They would participate in understated discussions about their child’s higher education. In reality, these conversations were battles with other parents on whose kid was better.

The winner of the battle took home the satisfaction of knowing that their kid was the shiniest trophy on their imaginary boasting mantle.

“My son goes to UT and studies business,” one Tita would say.

“Oh, my daughter is attending Baylor and is going to nursing school,” another one would say with a mouthful of kunchinta.

Another one would interject and throw in an out of state college which would always garner praise, “My son is attending NYU.”

The eyebrows started to rise with doubt when the same Tita would add, “He’s studying acting.”

That was a Filipino no-no. It is a cardinal sin for a Filipino offspring to even attempt any liberal art – especially one that involves creativity.

Then my mom, always a nonchalant boaster, would throw her hat in, “My son is going to Texas Tech University and he’s taking courses for medical school.”

Game. Set. Match. Pre-med always trumped everything. No exceptions.

I was always expected to go into the field of medicine and I was happy to oblige. I was good at science and a pro at math (even though I blew off my Calculus class my senior year of high school). My parents were happy that I filled in that Pre-med bubble when I turned in that application.

So a couple months back I wrote a teleplay for this screenwriting competition hosted by the New York Television Festival. And today, I got this email: Dear Friend, I regret to inform you that your script was not selected as one of the 25 finalists in the NYTVF-Fox Comedy Script Contest. The decision tasked to our readers was a very difficult one, and unfortunately there were a number of quality scripts that were unable to advance to the next round of the contest. Narrowing the initial field of over 880 pilots down to 25 was a tremendous challenge, yet the New York Television Festival was thrilled with the response and was astounded by the quality of effort put forth by its community of talented scriptwriters. Thank you again for the hard work and commitment exhibited in your pilot script. I encourage you to check back with the NYTVF Web site from time to time, as we hope to offer additional opportunities for aspiring television writers soon. In the meantime, we appreciate your support of the New York Television Festival and the independent television movement, and we hope to see you this September at the 2008 NYTVF. Best Regards, –NYTVF DENIED! [...]

And today, I got this email:

DENIED! I love rejection form letters. Man, I really wanted that Fox development deal and that $25,000 prize! I even put the competition logo and a faux “congratulations” letter on my vision board! And still, I did not win. I guess we can’t win them all. *sigh*

I guess they couldn’t handle the brilliance of my script.

Well, it hasn’t come to lay-offs yet, but they are having some buyout fun…check it out: The San Francisco Chronicle will offer at least 125 employees the chance to take a buyout before the end of the year, the company said Friday. “Obviously, we’re not the first newspaper to be affected by the continuing downturn in advertising,” said Publisher, President and CEO Frank Vega. “We are hopeful that by opting for our employees to voluntarily sign up for buyouts we can avoid any type of layoffs going forward.” The program is open to all employees who are not represented by a union as well as employees who are represented by the Northern California Media Workers’ Guild. The company said it would consider accepting more than 125 employees and that it has the right to reject as well as accept applicants. If the reduction goal is not met, the company said, layoffs will be likely. I thought the SF Chronicle was doing well for themselves. They seem so glamorous and hardcore. But I guess I was wrong! Welcome to the club folks!

Yes, I went to one of the most conservative universities in the nation and no, I don’t know why I chose to go there. But honestly, I don’t think I would have had it any other way… Anyways, here is an expert of my brilliance from the days of yore: Accessories are also becoming more stylish. Rhinestones and studded fabric are the latest craze. This is seen with many of the jewel-studded bandanas, belt buckles and jeans, yet another trend bought back from the 1980s. Wow. That is Pulitzer Prize worthy writing right there. Wanna read more of this painful article? Click here.
