I am not going to lie. I get excited when another Step Up installment hits the streetz. I mean, this franchise did launch the career of Channing Tatum.

Solely based on the ’80s font of the title card, I thought this teaser trailer was a parody. But alas, it was not. This time, we go to the fluorescent-hued city of Miami and are victimized to a dance-too-much-booty-in-the-pants festival of ass slappin’ and pop and lockin’ fun.

When I walked in to talk to director Wim Wenders about his latest work, Pina, I was greeted with his soft-spoke German demeanor and a compliment on my blue and black glasses. I, naturally accepted his kind words about my style and knew we would get along splendidly.

His style reflects the tone of his documentary about the late neo-modern choreographer, Pina Bausch. He’s eccentric, but sane. He’s interesting, but approachable. He’s progressive, yet grounded…and he’s just a cool dude.

Wim’s first encounter with Pina was when he saw one of her famous works, “Café Müller”. At the time, he had a girlfriend who took him to see the dance “against his will.” From there, he was caught in Pina’s orbit. They became good friends and for nearly 20 years they toyed with idea of making a documentary, but Wim didn’t know how to film dance — until he was introduced to 3D technology. Unfortunately, while he was preparing for their first 3D test shoot, Pina passed away. It took a while for Wim to get back on track with the project. He said that the original dancers in Pina’s company (who are in the film) convinced him to start filming again — so he did.

“When I was filming, I felt that Pina was behind me — talking to me,” says Wim.

Besides the 3D, the documentary is not your ordinary documentary. First off, there aren’t any “talking heads”. Wim does his own version of testimonials from the dancers via voiceovers and headshots. Secondly, as much as you want to see her, Pina is seldom seen on screen. “Pina didn’t like to do interviews,” says Wim. “She really didn’t like explaining her work.” In other words, Pina wanted to speak to you through her work — and there is plenty of that. From her iconic “Café Müller” to the intensity of “The Rite of Spring” her work engulfs you with Wim’s use of 3D. In addition, there are various vignettes shown throughout the documentary where Wim sets Pina’s dancers to do their work in public spaces in various European cities such as metropolitan street corners, industrial factories, and open fields — almost like like a high-brow flash mob. You would think a bunch of people would stop and stare, thinking it was some sort of street theater — but Wim didn’t have any problems. “It’s not like Hollywood,” says Wim. “No one cared about the cameras.”

With a 3D documentary inspired by his good friend under his belt, it’s only naturally to ask what kind of venture he will take on next.

“I would love to do a movie about architecture,” says Wim. “…in 3D.”

Pina opens in theaters January 20.

German filmmaker, Wim Wenders has raised the bar when it comes to documentaries. He made a documentary about trailblazing modern dance performer Pina Bausch…in 3D! From splashing around in water to violently kicking dirt around on stage, Wenders (who was also a close friend to Pina) made something more of a tribute rather than a documentary — but based on the trailer alone, it’s visually stimulating and — amazingly bizarre:

If you don’t remember The Wade Robson Project then you obviously aren’t as cool as me. If don’t know who Wade Robson is, then you are DEFINITELY not as cool as me.

On second thought, replace the use of the word “cool” with the word, “loser-ish” or even “troll-ish”.

I may be troll-ish, but any show and/or band with the word “project” tacked at the end of the name is AUTOMATICALLY certified fresh (can you say: THE TONY RICH PROJECT?).

In any matter, five or six years ago (perhaps even before that), Robson (choreographer extraordinaire who worked with a buffet of pop stars before making Emmy-award routines for So You Think You Can Dance) had a self-titled show on MTV — and it was kind of vain. And I say that because he would introduce the show with a solo routine that included self-congratulatory gyrating, poppin’, lockin’ and other moves from his frenetic “choreo” arsenal. Afterwards, with a sort of You Got Served sensibility, individual dancers would “battle” each other with cool dance moves while dressed in dated Urban Outfitters garb on a set that looked like it was from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze.

Like S.Y.T.Y.C.D., dancers would get eliminated one by one and the winner got money and a spot in a J.C. Chasez music video — that as probably KIND OF cool at the time.

I really think they should bring the show back — because we really need another reality dance show where dancers compete and then fade into obscurity. If you need more convincing, check out the awesomeness below:

…and this couldn’t come at a better time considering it is the season for “The Nutcracker” (did you see the trailer for the 3-D version? I am so not going to see it).

With all of this ballet stuff in the air, it only means one thing: little girls are gonna want to become ballerinas which will eventually lead to edgy hip-hop/ballet fusion dancing as well as a future as a self-obsessed, psychosexual ballerina who strives to be perfect and, along the way, decides to experiment with her sexuality.

Sounds about right.

It kind of reminds me of a run-in I had today with a semi-homeless man today (I say semi-homeless because he asked me for BART fare, so he obviously had some sort of destination to go to). He complimented my shoes. Actually, this routine is nothing like that.

Everyone is goin’ to be talking about this routine tomorrow…well…at least everyone who keeps up with So You Think You Can Dance:

I was kind of moved (but not to the point of tears) until Cat Deeley squawked, “YOUR CASE MATCHES MY DRESS!” That just ruined the moment. It was a real boner shrinker.

In any matter, this is exactly how I pack a suitcase.

I haven’t blogged in a while because: 1.) I don’t think there has been anything really blogworthy. I mean, So You Think You Can Dance has started their new season, but I’m just really *eh* about it thus far. and 2.) I am just lazy — but that has all changed since I got this bit of news:

PARAMOUNT PICTURES BEGINS CASTING SEARCH FOR THE FEATURE FILM FOOTLOOSE

This movie does not, I repeat DOES NOT need to be remade. How can you re-create the magic of John Lithgow’s evangelical attempt to exterminate the art of dance? And will there ever be a dance sequence that will replicate Chris Penn’s farm boy jive to Deniece Williams’s “Let’s Hear it For the Boy.” And what about that scene in the drive-in burger joint? Or Kevin Bacon’s dance of rage in the abandoned warehouse? Or better yet, what about Sarah Jessica Parker’s character Rusty? All have been cemented in pop culture history.

But alas, this movie will be remade no matter what I say. Like any other remake (or as they say in the industry, “re-imagining”), I have a morbid curiosity about how it will turn out. My guess is that the soul will be sucked out of the original and it will morph into some glossy Hollywood over-produced music video set to a soundtrack featuring the Black Eyed Peas and Taylor Swift. It will definitely feature lots of sparkle and sass (please reference the 2009 remake of Fame). They might even make it into a 3-D movie.

Anyways, this open call for auditions is “seeking males 18 or older to play high school seniors” and they “MUST HAVE NATURAL RHYTHM AND BE COMFORTABLE DANCING. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A TRAINED DANCER BUT A QUICK LEARNER.”

I am seriously thinking about busting out my Apple Bottom jeans and boots with the fur to try out for this thing.

For those of you who are into drinking games, I have created the best alcohol poisoning activity utilizing America’s Best Dance Crew.

Follow these simple instructions and you will be having fun in no time!

1.) Any time the contestants take a sip from Gatorade (or whatever beverage is sponsoring the show that season) during their rehearsals, chug down half a bottle of Boone’s (any variety will do – Strawberry Hill is always a favorite).

2.) Whenever Mario Lopez charmingly tosses his note card on the stage, take three chugs of Jagermeister.

3.) If anyone on the judging panel says “I appreciate that” or “I respect that” put your mouth on the spout of Franzia and let it run from 20 seconds.

4.) Any time Slater refers to Lil’ Mama as “Mamacita,” take five swigs of MD 20/20.

5.) If J.C. Chasez gets booed, shotgun a can of Natty Light.

6.) When any of the judges want to get into a slo-mo, do a keg stand.
