It has lost novelty and I miss the days of Austin Scarlett and Jay McCarroll poking fun at Wendy Pepper. Even so, I feel as though I have a sense of responsibility to watch the show. Now in its 7th season, the show still outdoes those poor excuses for fashion reality shows on Bravo (i.e. Launch My Line) – and it has improved a tad bit since it moved back to New York (that L.A. season brought a whole new meaning to lame). Nonetheless, this season is just “eh” – BUT – I am always waiting to hear what the sassy Southerner, Anthony has to say. He seems genuine, has a “snap-snap” attitude and he has the most personality from the whole bunch. Although his fashion skills leave much to be desired, he makes the show entertaining. I would love to see him in a reality show with Atlanta housewife, NeNe.

Now that the storm of fanatical outbursts over Alexander McQueen’s Paris Spring 2010 collection has settled, it’s safe enough to enter the field and actually say something about it. Not having seen the live-streaming show due millions upon millions of people logging on to SHOWstudio.com to watch, I felt defeated. It was like I was Carrie and someone dumped a bucket of pig’s blood on me. Okay. It wasn’t that serious. But trying to log on to that site to watch the show was a pain. When I finally saw the reposted video, I was transported to his show affectionately called, “Plato’s Atlantis.” Stingray silhouettes dominated the runway while short skirts stamped with trademark McQueen tailoring were drenched in outsized aquatic Rorschach reptilian blots. Washed out with alien-like makeup, the models donned menacing fins for hair.

All the while, they hobbled gracefully like extra terrestrial sea nymphs in shoes that were a steroid-infused mash-up of ballerina pointe shoes and crab claws – something a hot stripper in Atlantis would wear.

Although part of me was hoping that one of them would take a glorious fall to quench my thirst for low brow entertainment, my mind was racing at what was being poured out on that runway. It was as if the land and merpeople of The Little Mermaid were invaded by glamazon, Predator-like sea creatures and forced to drop E and have a week-long rave (not of the LovEvolution variety).

I’ll spare you the “brilliant” and “cutting edge” praises that this collection deserves. The world knows that McQueen is talented. You mention the name and all the “passion for fashion” types will admire his work. He can design, cut, elevate taste levels and give an electric shock of inspiration. When people go outside of the box, McQueen finds an area within that outside that hasn’t been touched and stakes his claim with quiet and clever certainty.

The reason why people got all a twitter (and yes, many people were tweeting about this) with this collection of sartorial sea life is because it was a enriching eyegasm. Yes, McQueen can design, but with a Hans Christian Andersen-like sensibility, he has the ability to captivate you into his world of provoking fantasy. Whether it is a sumptuous, eye-popping scaly rainbow fish dress or smooth-as-sharkskin trousers, he makes you see what he sees and finds a way to do it without being literal, self-indulgent or crazy with avant garde malarky.

The collection was serene, dangerous, balanced and had this edge that quietly gave other designers the middle finger. It was also a challenge to the world of fast fashion retailers that said, “Go ahead – just try and make a derivative of this.” Seeing an H&M knock-off of his shoe that looked like a fossilized prehistoric fish would definitely be a hoot.

When I did my interview with Margaret Cho for Hyphen Magazine (yes, this is a shameless name drop) I asked her about the state of Asian Americans in entertainment and she answered… There’s a great crop of (Asian American) talent. There are a couple of more Asian faces here and there – that is great. The “Slumdog Millionaire” win at the Oscars is super exciting and is great for the community. There also needs to be more Asian Americans behind the scenes – not just with movies, but with television, music and other forms of entertainment. I also did another interview with John Cho a while back (shameless name drop #2) and he practically said the same thing. That said, I am going to keep a running tally of the Asian Americans I see under the pop culture umbrella – particularly in movies, television, fashion and arts. I won’t necessarily pinpoint every single Asian American involved in a movie or TV show, but I will do my best. (I also welcome leads…) So here is my list starting from August 1, 2009: 1.)
When I did my interview with Margaret Cho for Hyphen Magazine (yes, this is a shameless name drop) I asked her about the state of Asian Americans in entertainment and she answered…

(I also welcome leads…)

So here is my list starting from August 1, 2009:

1.) Charlyne Yi in Paper Heart: According to Wikipedia, “her mother is of Filipino-Spanish descent and her father is of Korean, Irish, German, French and Native American.”

2.) Thakoon Panichgul in The September Issue: Thai fashion designer who does brilliant prints…CFDA wunderkid…a Michelle Obama favorite…and cute as a button.

3.) The Asian dude in all those AT&T commercials.

4.) Ang Lee, the Tawainese director of the upcoming film, Taking Woodstock. (I got to see a pre-screening of it and interviewed the brilliant director at the beginning of the month – yes, I am bragging.)

5.) The G.I. Joe movie may not have been the BEST, but it did have some Asians up in there: Gerald Okamura (credited as “Hard Master” – whatever that means), Brandon Soo Hoo (plays young Storm Shadow) and Byung-hun Lee (plays the older Storm Shadow).

6.) Season 4 America’s Best Dance Crew has a whole mess of Asians up in there: Hiroka “Hero” Mcrae and Mami Kanemitsu in the crew, We Are Heroes; select breakers (I think four of them) from the b-boy crew, Massive Monkeys; and ALL SEVEN of those kids from Fr3sh (why did the Asians have to get eliminated first?). We’ll collectively count this as 13.

7.) Just saw a How I Met Your Mother re-run titled “Three Days of Snow” and the recurring character of the cab driver Ranjit (played by Marshall Manesh reps the Asian American community!

Asian pop culture tally as of Aug. 17: 21

Not bad.

And I realize that this may border on the line of cultural vanity, but I am just going to follow Margaret Cho’s lead when she said, “I am into being self-righteous (laughs) I don’t think there is anything wrong with it.”
