It took me a while to accept Rihanna‘s “We Found Love” into my iPod workout playlist, but the repetitive synthesized organ riff and “hopeless” regurgitated chorus keeps my blood pumping at a steady pace whilst on a morning run.

Then there’s the Melina Matsoukas gritty music vid about a doomed couple that may be semi-autobiographical for the Barbados-born diva. Full of love, drugs, fireworks, wheat field makeout sessions and a volatile boyfriend played by Dudley O’Shaughnessy with Demolition Man-dyed hair (and kind of reminiscent of Mr. Chris Brown), the vid is a great instructional for those who want a toxic relationship.

It always takes a while for me to actually like a Rihanna song. In order for me to like a song by her, I usually wait until it’s played out — it makes me feel cool and dated. Lately, this song has been fueling my Embarcadero running — I just have to endure Drake‘s introductory “the square root of 69 is 8-something” lyrics in order to get pumped up to Ri Ri’s percussive Barbados yodeling.

This song will definitely prove to be effective due to the epic caloric intake I ingested over this long weekend of gluttony.

Eminem‘s new video for “Love the Way You Lie” featuring the vibrating echoes of Rihanna was released last week and it got like 30 gazillion hits in like 5 minutes on YouTube.

Okay. That’s an exaggeration — but it did get a lot of hits.

It got so many hits because it features Merry the Hobbit/Charle from Drive Shaft shoving his tongue down the throat of a Transformer hottie (a.k.a. Dominic Monaghan necking with Megan Fox). They also fight. Some violent fights. Intense fights. Very intense fights. It’s kind of hot.

We also see Eminem in a wheat field! Rihanna with red hair! A bar fight! A house on fire! And…Eminem rapping in a wheat field!

But the bottom line is that this song brings back substance to rap. Either my Zoloft isn’t working, but within the 4 minutes of this song, I actually felt something that a rap song hasn’t made me feel in a while: emotion. It told a story. And the fact that it is being told by two pop culture figures with damaged pasts makes it even more effective. It’s a pretty darn good song.

…did I mention Eminem raps in a wheat field?

With that out of the way, I have been dissecting his latest tune, “Run This Town” featuring Rihanna and Kanye “I keep on apologizing for stupid things I do” West. All I have to say is that any rapper that can smoothly fit in the words Maison Martin Margiela into his lyrical arsenal is a genius (fast forward to timestamp 2:37ish):
