Yesterday, director Tarsem Singh answered with his more fantastical Snow White adaptation, Mirror, Mirror. It looks like the Snow White wars have begun (we’ll leave TV’s Once Upon a Time out of this — as if it even had a chance). Before we get into the snap judgments from the voices of the Internet, let’s take a look at the trailers: One looks like a gritty Joan of Arc-esque epic tale of womanhood with lots of scenes of helplessly running through the woods and the other looks like a candy-coated sanitized slapstick gum drop. That said, the voices of the Internet immediately had a bigger boner for Snow White and the Huntsman — but it wasn’t because of Kristen Stewart as the heroine.
Last week, the trailer for dark and bad-ass Snow White and the Huntsman by rookie feature film director Rupert Sanders came out. Yesterday, director Tarsem Singh answered with his more fantastical Snow White adaptation, Mirror, Mirror.

It looks like the Snow White wars have begun (we’ll leave TV’s Once Upon a Time out of this — as if it even had a chance).

Before we get into the snap judgments from the voices of the Internet, let’s take a look at the trailers:

One looks like a gritty Joan of Arc-esque epic tale of womanhood with lots of scenes of helplessly running through the woods and the other looks like a candy-coated sanitized slapstick gum drop. That said, the voices of the Internet immediately had a bigger boner for Snow White and the Huntsman — but it wasn’t because of Kristen Stewart as the heroine. It was because of the bad-ass Evil Queen played by Charlize Theron. She looks WAAAAAAY cool, sexy, evil and more in line with how an evil queen should be. With the Evil Queen played by Julia Roberts in Mirror, Mirror — she’s cartoony and will probably receive less drag queen homages.

All that said, these movies are not about Snow White they are about the bitchiness of the Evil Queen. By looks alone, Snow White and the Huntsman wins because Charlize just LOOKS like a relentless, evil bitch. It’s so hot. As for Julia — not so much. She’s going the comedic route with her queen — much like a brutally honest and crazy aunt who gives bad Christmas gifts.

This doesn’t mean I discounting Mirror, Mirror. Evil Queen aside, the movie wins because of Snow White’s (Lily Collins) bushy eyebrows, Armie Hammer as the embodiment of a Prince Charming and, of course, the use of dwarves.

J. Edgar and Melancholia open in more theaters today and both are causing quite a buzz among critic circles. Edgar is the story about J. Edgar Hoover. He was an unbelievably ambitious hard worker, revered founder of the FBI and had a private life. A very, very, ambiguously gay private life. It is directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Dustin Lance Black. It kind of has Oscar bait written all over it. I had a hard time watching both movies. Mainly because I had get hunger pangs during both screenings. While watching the movies I was thinking of things like: “I wonder if that leftover Chinese food from Monday night is still good.
J. Edgar and Melancholia open in more theaters today and both are causing quite a buzz among critic circles. Kirsten Dunst already snagged an award at Cannes for her portrayal of Justine in Melancholia. She’s simply a girl coping with her troubled relationship with her sister and the threat of a new mysterious planet about to crash into Earth — as we all do. J.

If not, I’ll just go down to Safeway and get a couple of frozen burritos. That would make for an excellent dinner. Perhaps I could get a little fancy and get some of those Tostidos artisan chips as a side.”

These are the kinds of things I think of when watching movies that don’t have my total attention. I’m not saying the movie is terrible, they just make me hungry — like I have the munchies.

Speaking of munchies, as I was watching both movies, I asked myself: “Which one would be better to watch under the influence of mind altering drugs?” So I decided to explore that question with both:

J. Edgar: The story of J. Edgar Hoover is phenomenal and, in a weird nagging way, inspirational. However, with all Eastwood films, I feel like an old crotchety man is telling me a story while a music box is playing incessantly in the background. I am a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio (except when he did that accent in Blood Diamond). He’s great as the title role. He does what he can with this role and does a good job, but I was taken aback by Armie Hammer. He was just gay enough as J. Edgar’s maybe-maybe not lover Clyde Tolson. And of course, there’s Naomi Watts as Hoover’s lifelong secretary Helen Gandy. She’s great in everything.

In terms of the 4:20-friendliness of this movie, it would rate high on the giggle factor. I could totally envision stoners watching this movie and cracking up at the site of Clyde and Hoover arguing or the scenes when they are trying to find the Lindbergh baby. Also, seeing DiCaprio and Hammer as old men would be a total laugh fest for potheads because they look like human versions of Statler and Waldorf from The Muppets.

Melancholia: I already knew that this movie was going to go over my head because it was written and directed by Lars von Trier. Anything by him is way too conceptual for a simple-minded superficial guy like me. But let’s face it, this is known as the “topless Dunst” movies. Yes, she shows her boobies.

Nonetheless, for over two hours, I was subjected to the impending doom of Earth and Kirsten and the hobo-chic gamine Charlotte Gainsbourg dealing with their sister issues. And it felt like two hours (two hours and fifteen minutes to be exact) of what many people define as great acting.

That time would be great use for stoners — especially the uber-visually orgasmic prologue. I could totally see a pothead enamored by the painting-in-motion (and the lightning coming out of Kirsten Dunst’s fingers!). I could also see a pothead crying because of it. Plus, end of the world movies are always good for stoners because they will start over-analyzing it and/or start freaking out — which would provide for great entertainment (probably better than the actual movie). Finally, Kiefer Sutherland is in the movie. That alone will have a stoner constantly asking, “Dude, what is Jack Bauer doing in this movie? Is he going to save the world?”

Of the two, it is clear that Melancholia would give the most joy whilst high — but you don’t have to take my word for it! Watch the trailers and decide for yourself:

Well look at that — Channing Tatum can do comedy! And him paired with Jonah Hill? I think I am detecting a “Best Couple of 2012″ award in their future!

From the looks of it, this ain’t even a remake — it’s a reboot. (Spoiler alert: apparently, Johnny Depp makes a cameo.)

Even though they didn’t use any of my casting choices, I am looking forward to this. I am exprehensive.

Elizabeth Olsen (left) with Sarah Paulson in Martha Marcy May Marlene
.

“It’s so cold inside and there are weird patterns on the wall,” says Martha Marcy May Marlene actor Elizabeth Olsen (yes, she is the sister of the Hollywood Olsen duo of Full House fame) as she, director/writer Sean Durkin and a small group of journalists walk outside of the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco to enjoy a roundtable interview al fresco.

The duo are on their first press junket tour for the indie movie about a woman who escapes a cult and tries to acclimate to a new non-cult lifestyle. The movie has been through the the festival gauntlet and has already been getting a fair amount of Oscar buzz — and although she really shouldn’t be, Elizabeth (or Lizzie as some people call her) is kind of shocked about the buzz.

“I think it’s the silliest thing EVER!” laughs Elizabeth. “It’s not even in theaters yet!”

Well lucky for us, the movie opens in select theaters on Friday so perhaps that Oscar buzz can become less silly.

During the interview Elizabeth and Sean talk more about the movie, their ideal cult life and having fun while making such a tense film.

Have you found out new things about your movie since you have been talking about the film so much on this press tour?

Sean: There are definitely interesting stuff that happens. I feel like when I am making a movie, I don’t want to think about it or intellectualize it too much. After it’s done and you have to talk about it, you have to dig a little deeper and you realize things about yourself and where the material came from.

Elizabeth: It’s been fascinating for me because, unlike Sean, I didn’t do a lot of research about modern day cults. This being our ninth city, someone always comes up to me after the screening Q&A and says that they themselves were in a cult, their family member or friend were in a cult — and that’s been shocking to me.I’ve been learning a lot about that. I don’t think of this film as a great message about cults. I thought about it as a human experience and relationships. It’s been really fascinating to hear people’s reaction.

How did you approach the role of Martha/Marcy/May/Marlene?

Elizabeth: When I read this, I didn’t think to understand this character that I needed to know how it was like to escape a cult. There were times I’d ask Sean if certain things happened to people he talked to — but other than that is was all about relationships.

Sean Durkin behind the camera

Why are you think people are so fascinated by cult life?

Sean: I don’t know. I think people have a desire to be a part of something larger than themselves and I think it affects everybody. It’s a healthy desire. When you take that desire and examine it and someone manipulates it to their benefit, like people in a cults do, I think that’s frightening.

How long did it take you to say the title of the movie without getting tongue-tied?

Elizabeth: Before I even got the part — I just started saying it like it was no one else’s business! I got SO good at it.

Elizabeth, I know you have a lot of projects lined up and now that this movie is being labeled as your “breakout role”, is there a certain actor that you look to in terms of career path?

Elizabeth: Everyone has their own journey they are going to follow. I have no control of the future — and I kind of like that feeling. I do really respect and think that Kate Winslet is very smart in the choices that she has made. I think she is good in everything she does.

Were there any movies that you pulled inspiration from to achieve this uncomfortable, uncertain and fearful tone for the Martha Marcy May Marlene?

Sean: The two of the most important movies I ever saw were The Shining and Rosemary’s Baby. Rosemary’s Baby was more of a direct influence for this in the sense of tension and paranoia. Robert Altman’s Images and Three Women — I just like being scared. When I was a little kid my mom used to tell me ghost stories and scare the sh*t out of me and I liked it.

Elizabeth: We were similar kids — I loved being scared.

The movie is a different kind of scary.

Elizabeth: The thing that is scary in scary movies is the build up.

Sean: I love and hate horror films because some of them have a great setup, great build up and then it just falls apart.

If you were to start a cult, what would it be? And what kind of leader would you be?

Sean: I’ll let Lizzie answer that one (laughs).

Elizabeth: If I were a cult leader there would be lots of yoga in the mountains–

Sean: That sounds dangerous already!

Elizabeth: Lots of being balance and being at peace where you are.

Would you worship some sort of deity?

Elizabeth: No — you would worship the self. You would have a self-sustaining farm and there would be cooking classes.

So basically a yoga retreat.

Elizabeth: Exactly! It would be like a yoga retreat ALL DAY. EVERYDAY! (laughs).

Was it hard to bring levity to the set considering the heavy subject matter?

Elizabeth: It was the easiest thing to have a good time.

Did you watch a lot of episodes of Dance Moms or something like that?

Elizabeth: We stayed at a hotel that didn’t have internet and we didn’t have cell service — but we did have Buck Hunter.

Sean: And an awesome jukebox with a lot of Katy Perry.

Martha Marcy May Marlene opens in select theaters October 28.

With Halloween coming up, Human Centipede has sparked some of the most creative uses of ass-to-mouth iterations. For instance, it makes for a great costume idea:

But perhaps this is the most childhood shattering and hysterically eye-gouging iteration yet: artist Alex Pardee’s vision of Snap, Crackle, and Pop from Rice Krispies in one of the most compromising position EVER:

I thought that writing this post would be fun. Now I just have the sudden urge to cry and curl up in the fetal position…while eating a Rice Krispie Treat.

Paramount Pictures is taking full advantage of the social media landscape by launching a “Tweet To See It First” campaign for Paranormal Activity 3. In this third installment of their haunting home video horror franchise. There’s a home video camera and…well…scary shit happens. Here’s how it works: the movie will premiere in 20 cities worldwide on October 18, three days before the film officially hits theaters.
