I don’t know what it is, but I am not enjoying How I Met Your Mother as much as I used to. Oh wait — I know exactly why I am not enjoying it.

It has become annoying and tired.

The show that was once humorous, full of wit and “sparkle” has become a sitcom where the lovable characters are now in an endless hamster wheel of unfunniness — especially Ted (but I’ll get to that later).

At TCA, the creators said they have no definite end for the show. This means that we can be stuck with listening to this droning story about how Ted met this mother that has become a buried plot line.

As I watched last night’s 150th episode titled “46 minutes”, I actually fell asleep. Not because I was sleepy, but because I was bored beyond legen — wait for it — dary proportions. From what I did manage to watch, I found out that they reintroduced Lily’s stripper doppleganger, Barney tried to be “in charge” of the group, and Lily and Marshall continued to adapt to suburban life.

I adore the HIMYM characters. Actually, I ADORED them. Now, they have become guests on my TV that have overstayed their welcome. Their growth as people has just made me roll my eyes in impatience and therefore given me a reason to stop caring. For the most part, they have plateaued. Things around them are changing, but they seem to be just sitting there. Like furniture that can talk. Here’s how each of them downgraded since season one.

It would have been fine if Ted revealed the mother last season, marking the end of the series. I would have been fine if this season would be the finale — but no. We still have to sit through the bitchassness malarkey that is Ted Mosby. The only thing that could reinvigorate my love for HIMYM? More R. Sparks.

It’s the end of the week and as I celebrate by watching reruns of Dance Moms and watching the wonder that is Abby Lee “I need four sleep apnea machines connected to me in order to get a good night sleep” Miller, I am waiting in anticipation for Sunday’s telecast of the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards. It will be the highlight of my January.

If all my predictions are right, it will be a sign that I need to start smoking again.

It was a good year for the best show on television…and that show is Community. Actually, from a “ratings” perspective, it wasn’t THAT great of year for the poignant show about a rag tag group of community college misfits that reference pop culture with a snappy skewer and have totally AWESOME paintball wars. It was benched from NBC’s midseason lineup and there are terrible rumblings that the show will be — GASP! — canceled!

However, from a fan perspective, the show steamrolled less clever “TOP RATED SITCOMS”. Through social media and flash mobs, fans banded together like a D&D crew to save the show that gave us a sparkling rainbow performance of “Pocket Full of Hawthornes”, an ’80s anime foosball war, “Inspector Spacetime”, a “Hearts of Darkness” mockumentary homage, a playful (yet deserving) stab at Glee, and, of course, the visual of Dean Pelton and Jeff Winger singing “Kiss From a Rose.”

The “six seasons and a movie” cry was heard around the world and whether or not NBC listens is up to fate. Because there is no fate but what we make.

To make the TV Gods decision a little easier I offer them the episode, Remedial Chaos Theory
— the best 30 minutes (give or take a couple of minutes) of TV ever created.

I say we should just pick the most non-evil timeline for the best show on TV — one where Work It doesn’t exist and where Community airs for a couple more seasons.

When Oprah Winfrey ended her popular day time talk show on May 25, 2011, millions upon millions upon millions of her loyal followers let out a collective snot-infused ugly cry. Leading up to the show was a festival of A-listers worshipping the Media Goddess for all that she has done for the world. That said, she will NEVER be on TV again. EVER.

Actually, her new prime time series, Oprah’s Next Chapter airs in January on OWN — a network she started. Then there is her magazine…and she is still rich. So her show ending probably wasn’t that big of a deal.

I was guilted into watching Breaking Bad. It’s one of those shows where people automatically think you are a moron if you DON’T watch it. In turn, they think they are WAAAAAAAY better than you.

After stabbing the last person who scoffed at me for not watching it, I gave in and purchased the first season and freebased it like a whore child. I immediately inhaled season 2 and 3 just in time to watch the silently conniving pokerfaced Gus (the best TV villain of 2011 played by Giancarlo Esposito) get half his face blown off in the season 4 finale.

I am now one of those douchetastic people who will scoff at you for not watching it.

The AMC show about chemistry teacher Walter White (played by the BRILLIANT Bryan Cranston) and his fly-for-a-white-guy former student Jesse Pinkman (played by the BRILLIANT Aaron Paul becoming intertwined in the New Mexico world of meth manufacturing is probably the best show to come to television since Felicity — and all of you know how I feel about Felicity.

Every Sunday night I canceled my life for Breaking Bad. It’s tense, visceral, and iced with a gritty Southwestern haze that makes you want to wear turquoise jewelry and live in an adobe crack house. The dysfunctional father/son relationship between Walter and Jesse as well as the crumbling morals of the White family (particularly Anna Gunn‘s spiteful and conflicted Skylar White) brings a satisfaction of WTF entertainment that is as pure as the meth Walter and Jesse make in their mobile lab. With its fifth and final season upon us, it’s the only hour of television where I could shamelessly gasp with shock at all of its outrageous game changing moments — and I haven’t done that since Felicity cut her hair.

A little over a week ago, I asked my loyal readers to vote off a show from my DVR. The two shows on the chopping block were the mid-century modern, high-flying Pan Am or the fairytale serial drama Once Upon a Time. A whopping 18 READERS (yes, you read that right: 1-8!) voted and here are the results:

So there you have it. Once Upon a Time will no longer have a space on my DVR. I am going to have ask it to go back to their condo, pack their bags, do an exit interview, and then immediately leave my DVR. I am sorry Ginnifer Goodwin. At least you’ll still be present on my TV when HBO decides to play Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!.

This does not mean that Pan Am is safe from elimination. My feelings about HBO’s Enlightened starring Laura Dern hasn’t really been sticking to my ribs. That said, this week’s DVR deathmatch is between Pan Am and Enlightened. Once again, I am putting the fate of my DVR lineup in your hands.

Happy Endings is by far my favorite new show of 2011…even though it isn’t necessarily BRAND NEW. Currently in its second season, Happy Endings is one of those show which I flocked to late in the game. The snappy writing, appropriate inappropriateness, the witty quips, and approachable pop culture references make the show a stand-out and, more importantly, entertaining.

The genuinely cool-because-they-aren’t-tabloid-fodder actors Elisha Cuthbert, Eliza Coupe, Zachary Knighton, Adam Pally, Damon Wayans Jr., and Casey Wilson play a group of friends in their thirties created from the brain of David Caspe. When two of the friends, Alex (Cuthbert) and Dave (Knighton) break up on their wedding day, the group is put in a tug-o-war situation — too bad that story is regurgitated and, in all honesty, a little lame. Thank God they decided to move on from that almost immediately.

The rest of the series is just about their thirtysomething lives as they try to make it in “the big city”. It’s more clever than Friends and moves at a more tolerable rapid fire pace than How I Met Your Mother. Plus, one of the main characters is black (Wayans) and another is gay (Pally) — because we all know that the crew from Friends and H.I.M.Y.M. stick to their own kind. That’s not a judgment. I know it’s just a choice of theirs.

In any matter, their urban adventures are about nothing and everything all at once. From buying your first home to suburban housesitting to connecting with “cool and popular” teenage girls to creating low-budget commercials for your food truck, the crew from Happy Endings can provide a gay ol’ time…and I guarantee that it is not one of the shows that says “The city is a CHARACTER on the show!” That kind of bullshit makes me vomit.

With each fall TV season, I immediately program my DVR to record each and every single new show (most of them). Then, one by one they start getting deleted from my queue. Sometimes divine intervention handles things for me (Charlie’s Angels) other times, the show deserves to get the boot (sorry Whitney!). Other times, I know I could just watch a deserving show On Demand (Revenge, I love you). There are also newfound shows that I missed the first time around (Happy Endings, you are indeed happy). Finally there are shows in which I am on the fence. Case in point: Pan Am and Once Upon a Time. This is where you come in!

I am going to treat my DVR as it should be treated: as a reality show. I am going to leave it up to YOU, the gracious and attentive Finer Dandy reader to vote for which show gets eliminated from my DVR. Pan Am has been semi-fulfilling my need for a super-stylized ’60s hour-long drama since Mad Men won’t be returning until midseason.

I have stayed somewhat loyal to Once Upon a Time because I know some Lost writers involved with the writing of this show. Plus, I love me a good, cartoony fairytale set to low budget special effects.
